Changes to attendee numbers

The number of attendees allowed at a ceremony will change over the coming months, based on the government's roadmap out of coronavirus restrictions.

Step 1 - from 29 March 2021

There will be a legal limit of 6 attendees at ceremonies. However, ceremonies will no longer be limited to 'exceptional circumstances' (for example, where one member of the couple has a terminal illness).

Step 2 - no earlier than 12 April 2021

There will be a legal limit of 15 attendees at ceremonies.

Because of social distancing, the capacity of the Erimus room is 15 attendees. This includes the couple, witnesses, and guests, but does not include those working at the ceremony, like registration officials and venue managers.

Step 3 - no earlier than 17 May 2021

There will be a legal limit of 30 attendees at ceremonies.

Because of social distancing, the capacity of the Erimus room is 17 attendees. This includes the couple, witnesses, and guests, but does not include those working at the ceremony, like registration officials and venue managers.

Step 4 - no earlier than 21 June 2021

There will be no legal limit on attendees at ceremonies.

All dates and attendee numbers will be reviewed and risk assessed by the government, and may change in line with guidance. From April the government will run pilots for events like large weddings, to see how measures like enhanced testing might allow large groups to attend a ceremony without needing to socially distance.
