Bulky item collection

We will be restarting our bulky waste collections again from Monday 20 July. You can book by phone for either a free or premium service. The premium service will let you get your item(s) collected quicker.

Please note, we're not currently able to collect mattresses.

About bulky waste

Bulky waste is household waste or rubbish that can't go into your wheelie bin.

We have a free service to collect bulky items. The service is available to all residents of Middlesbrough, and is offered in addition to the weekly rubbish and fortnightly recycling collections.

Examples of bulky waste are:

  • kitchen items - e.g. fridge, freezer, cooker, microwave
  • electrical items - e.g. TV, computer, washing machine
  • furniture - e.g. sofa, bed

Businesses must request a one-off collection, not a bulky waste collection. There is a cost for this service.

Book a bulky waste collection

You can book a bulky waste collection by calling 01642 726001.

Our phone lines are extremely busy so please bear with us, as you may experience a very long wait time on the phone.

You can either book a free collection, or a premium collection.

The free collection service is very popular, so when you phone up and make a booking, the Customer Centre will be able to tell you the waiting time for a collection in your area.

We know that some people can't wait for several months to get rid of their items. So you can also use our premium bulky waste collection service, where you can pay for your items to be collected within three weeks. You'll need to pay for your collection to secure your collection date.

Charges for the premium service are:

  • £20 for up to 5 items (depending on weight)
  • £40 for up to 10 items (depending on weight)
  • £60 for up to 15 items (depending on weight)

Please note, we're currently unable to collect mattresses.

When your waste is collected

For both bulky waste and premium bulky waste collections, we'll give you a collection date, and advice about how to present your items for collection. For safety reasons, if you're getting glass collected, it must be taped, bubble-wrapped, or smashed up and placed in a box which is securely taped up.

We'll collect items from an easily accessible point, closest to the outside of your property. Our teams can't enter your home to remove, or help to remove, items. Please make sure the items are placed at the collection point before 7am on the day of collection.

Please note, we have to make separate collections for electrical and non-electrical items due to environmental legislation.

Don't forget you can also take your waste to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Haverton Hill. We need to follow the government's rules on social distancing at the HWRC. This means less people are allowed in. The only way you can take your waste to the HWRC is by booking an appointment. Please don't just turn up - you won't be allowed in.
